New Book Spotlights Bond between Humans and Animals

Animals have sense of humor if we know where to look, says author

2011-05-26

LONGWOOD, FLâ€"In her delightful new book Meet Me Under the Old Naseberry Tree: A Saga of Five Generations ($16.99, paperback, 978-1-60647-920-9), author Hortense M. Jenkins encourages readers to understand that the animals we have for pets should be treated with love and dignity, while those in the wild must be treated with respectâ€"not as outsiders but as one of God's creation. Most of all, readers will be reminded that animals have a sense of humor if human beings know where to look.

"The essence of my book is for adults and children to try to understand that animals act in their capacity when their security is threatened,” says Jenkins, who lives in Queens, New York, with her husband Mark. "What prompted me to write this book was the conflict between the birds and the cats [in my backyard]. They were parents and their baby fell to the ground on the solo flight, and so the parents would move mountains to protect their young. The cats have no choice but to find refuge among the trees and flowers. As I watched the encounters between birds and animals, I lost myself in thoughts and meditations that resulted in the revelation of the birth of Jesus in the presence of those animals on that holy night.”

Her inner being awakened, Jenkins was prompted to ask: What did the animals see? Who said what? Why weren't they talking? And in those questions, her next book was born: What Happened That Special Night.

Other books by Jenkins include Spirits of the Living God and Pinches Patches and the Petchery.
