Teacher’s Classroom Memories Tickle the Funnybone
Memoir offers collection of stories so crazy they have to be true
LONGWOOD, FLâ€"If laughter is the best medicine, readers looking for a draught of homespun humor will find anecdotes aplenty in Tales From Behind the Teacher’s Desk: Memories From My Teaching Career ($15.99, paperback, 978-1-61215-456-5; also available in e-book format) by Beverly Oliver Carr. This compilation of stories spans Carr’s entire career as an elementary schoolteacher and reads like a comedy of errors where, fortunately, everything comes out right.
â€?"Throughout my career, there was a constant stream of humorous experiences that my colleagues and I would share, talk, and laugh about over and over,” recalls Carr. â€?"Often they would tell me, ‘You need to write a book!’ When I retired, I decided to take on the challenge and write down all my humorous adventures. It was a way of opening the world of teaching for others to share, and because they would be written down, hopefully the stories will be remembered and enjoyed.”
Carr lived the stories in this book as a public schoolteacher at Cannonsburg Elementary School in Boyd County, Kentucky, from 1976 until her retirement in 2008. She continued working at the same school two years afterward, to help with a new reading program. â€?"I wanted to write these stories down and pass them on, as a tribute to all who were a part of making them,” says Carr. â€?"When readers read my book, I hope they will enjoy the humor it is meant to convey. However, I also hope they experience the leading of the Lord Jesus Christ throughout my career. It was not a perfect career, because I am not perfect. My students and coworkers can attest to that! But it was my goal to have Him at the center of it all.”
