LONGWOOD, FL--If we are not struggling to improve, we are not growing. If we are not growing, we are not happy. In Growing Better ($10.99, paperback, 978-1-60791-061-9; $18.99, hardcover, 978-1-60791-062-6), Xulon Press author Gerald G. Patterson selects and comments on quotations that inform and inspire, quotations related to the theme of "growing better." What started as a blank book is now filled to the brim with several of these choice quotations from a variety of sources. Wise men and women from ancient times to the present contribute to this book.

Says Patterson, "My hope is that the many informative and inspiring quotations in my book will give readers direction and meaning to their lives. Why bother to search for direction and meaning for joy. And the only way to joy in this life is through struggles--struggles with ourselves for self-improvement, struggles to learn what is true and do what is right."

A graduate of Holy Cross Seminary College in LaCrosse, Wisconsin, Patterson says the secular world views success only in terms of economics. His book hopes to present a view counter to that, one that espouses the sanity of the Christian worldview in contrast to the emptiness of pursuing happiness through self-indulgence or materialism. "As Henry Mortyn Field once said, 'Everybody finds out that all success worth having is founded on Christian rules of conduct,'" he says.

Gerald G. Patterson has been a high school English teacher, a professional driving teacher, and a radio dispatcher. He is the author of How to Pass a Road Test for Your Driver's License.
