Schemmer Confronts the Ubiquitous Question of Why People Hurt

2012-11-14

MAITLAND, FL— Through Dr. Kenneth E. Schemmer’s new book, Between Faith and Tears ($14.99, paperback, 978-1-62230-826-2; $7.49, e-book, 978-1-62230-827-9), readers will find answers to their questions about why we suffer and what we can possibly gain from it. Pain has a tendency to be blinding; Schemmer wants his readers to be able to learn from it instead. He believes that not only can we benefit from our painful experiences, but we can also be a catalyst for others to do the same.

“The way we face our sufferings can defeat us by worthless complaining and bitterness or encourage us to find meaning and to assist us in becoming the best persons we can be,” states the author. “This book unveils the stories of real patients in the depth of their sorrow as they experienced it and how they found meaning and joy despite their tragedies. It also deals with many misconceptions about human suffering that are not answers at all. This book deals with the dark experiences of life's suffering and offers a biblical understanding of suffering, even though some of the answers may be difficult.”

Schemmer has been face to face with pain for many years as a practicing medical doctor. Witnessing large amounts of suffering, he noticed that reactions to it vary from person to person. Some patients fall apart and others grow; Schemmer also has his own firsthand experience with acute suffering and loss – that of losing a daughter the day she was born. In addition to practicing medicine, he has also coached a number of individuals who are studying in seminary on how to care for patients that are very sick or even dying.
