major staff change and what they can do to promote a positive, healthy outcome.
He includes practical, specific description of the elements of the transition
process, as well as a detailed plan that can be applied to most churches. Offering
his own first-hand experience, Dr. Passavant guides church leaders through the
seven principles that he has discovered are the keys to a successful change in
leadership.
“The succession of a pastor in a local church is the most important single decision that a church will face,” states the author. “Church succession is the single most important decision that many churches face in a generation. A poor outcome can have very painful consequences for years to come. There are elements of that process that can be applied to nearly every church that will encourage a positive outcome.”
Dr. Jay Passavant was ordained in the UPUSA for over seven years. In 1981, with the support of his wife Carol, he launched North Way Christian Community near Pittsburgh, PA and led the church for over three decades. In 2013, he founded the consulting firm Passavant Leadership Group, providing integrated services to churches and nonprofit organizations with a focus on the strategic planning and implementation of major leadership transitions. He has also earned a M.Div. and D.Min from Fuller Theological Seminary.
