MAITLAND, FL— Within the pages of Janice Tanner and Theresa Pruett’s new book, The Return - An Adopted Chinese Daughter Returns Home, ($16.49, paperback, 9781498457514; $26.49, hardcover, 9781498462464) is a journal of thoughts and feelings of Theresa, an adopted girl from Shanghai, who after 10 years returned home to visit China. This book is unique - written jointly by the adopted child and her adopted mother. Rather than leave her cultural identity behind, Theresa chose to embrace and celebrate it by returning to visit her orphanage, her teachers, friends and the country she loved. Readers will hear directly from the adopted child's perspective about the journey of adoption. It emphasizes the importance of re-connecting with a child's culture and country as part of their lifetime development. It also provides insight into how cultural identity is a necessary component in parenting adopted ethnic children – and shows how faith and community strengthen this unique adoption journey.

We have not found other books that document this type of journey,” states the author. “Hearing the story from an adopted child's/adult's point of view is very special. We strongly encourage all ethnically adopted children to re-connect with their country and culture.”

Theresa Pruett, named “Yude” at birth, was born in Shanghai, China. She was abandoned before the age of one. She lived in a city orphanage until she was adopted at age 12 and was renamed Theresa after her adoption. She presently works and lives in Oregon with her husband and son. This book is her story.
