MAITLAND, FL— Carlos Ramos Mattei’s new book published in Spanish, LOS REFORMADORES ITALIANOS - Promovieron la reforma del cristianismo a la sombra del Vaticano, ($19.49, paperback, 9781498436182; $9.99, e-book, 9781498436199) promotes an awareness of the Christian heritage common to both Catholics and Protestants, by examining the way Humanists, clergymen and aristocrats in Italy at the beginning of the Reformation dealt with the challenge of rescuing the Christian faith from the chokehold of medieval ideas and practices. According to the author, in the Spanish language there are very few books on this topic, if at all. Most of the literature on the Reformation in Spanish suffers from strong bias, and prejudiced convictions, no matter whether Catholic or Evangelical.

By reading about the lives of the Italian Reformers the reader should be able to see that period in history in a more realistic, nuanced perspective, away from the easy generalizations and passionate, blind argumentations, away from the easy demonizations,” states the author. “This will contribute to the effort towards ecumenical understanding between Christians, all who share in the same faith in Jesus Christ.

Carlos Ramos Mattei studied at the Gregorian University, Rome and obtained a PhD in Philosophy from the Catholic University of Louvain (KUL), Belgium. He was a professor at the (State) University of Puerto Rico for over 35 years. In 2010, he published Concilio Vaticano II - Conceptos y Supuestos on the Second Vatican Council. It is a thorough study that includes the historical background for the concepts developed at the Council. In preparing this publication, he became convinced that the renewal of the Roman Church implies accepting the perspective proposed by some of the Italian Reformers such as Juan de Valdés.
