shows readers that working together as a family team can be fun, productive and
a way to enjoy family traditions. It is easy to allow one member to do all the
work, but in order for everyone to enjoy the benefits of the final project, the
entire family must participate. In this book, we find mom making the decision
to teach her family a hard lesson, but in the end, everyone shares in the
responsibility of a wonderful and tasty family accomplishment. Readers will see
the fun in sharing a responsibility, the importance of maintaining a family
tradition, and will together be able to try out the recipe provided with in
this book. The story will encourage the reader and it's listener to spend time
together reading and experiencing a hands on project.
Thompson
says, “Home in the Big Back Yard—Peaches
in July is only the first in a series of quaint and enticing animal stories.
The charisma of the story and the striking artwork has an old world charm that
draws you into the enchanted world these little animal characters live in.
Finding a need for revisiting family values and basic life skills are two
important reasons to read this book. The story is simple to understand, honest
in its message, and will begin an engaging dialogue between the reader and its'
young listener.”
As
a preschool teacher for more than twelve years, Karla Harney Thompson was able
to experience reading to children much of her time. In this arena she learned
which story books they wanted to read over and over. Thompson was employed by
the University of Kentucky 4-H Youth Development Program for over ten years.
Here she produced and facilitated programs with over eight hundred youth every
month, teaching basic life skills, as well as other youth related subjects. Her
working with youth in churches as a drama coach and youth leader for over forty
years gives her much insight into young people today.
