Book Summary
In our culture, eating disorders have become very serious. There is a suggested need for further research and understanding as indicated by the inability of the predominant etiological theories to explain the growth of eating disorders, particularly anorexia. An important question to ask ourselves is, Why are people feeling the need to starve themselves to death to cope in today's society? What can be done to correct this before the epidemic spreads further?
There is an internal world in which people with an eating disorder live. We often find books that discuss and describe the external world (the behaviors), but rarely do we find a book that takes you into the thoughts and feelings behind the behaviors. That is exactly what this book does.
This is a diary of the inner struggles one woman faced. Some will be able to identify with her, and some will come to a better understanding of what goes on underneath the surface of an eating disorder. Knowledge is the best defense against the "unknown." Perhaps that is the place to begin the healing process and prevent eating disorders from gaining more ground in this culture.
Author Profile
KRISTA BETH DRIVER is an ordinary person with an extraordinary passion to dispel the myths about eating disorders. In an attempt to bring awareness to others, she has spoken candidly on the radio and in seminars about her own battle with an eating disorder. Earning her doctorate in psychology with an emphasis on diagnosing and treating eating disorders, Dr. Driver has done extensive research into the etiology of anorexia and bulimia. The conclusion of her studies was simply that there is a lack of knowledge about these disorders. Therefore, this author has made it her mission to present information and has invited us all to read her diary, desiring others to truly gain a perspective on the internal world of an eating disorder.
