Book Summary
Amateur boxer's from New Jersey, Billy David and James Morgan could not have been more different, but that didn't prevent them from striving for a common goal: winning the National Golden Gloves Tournament before signing a lucrative contract to turn pro. Morgan, a twenty five-year old Afro-American from the city dealt with racism his entire life. Boxing gave him the ability to be judged on his talent alone, and a chance to escape the inner city, giving his wife and three children the life they deserved. In a culture dominated by Afro-Americans, David, a white college educated kid from the suburbs soon learned what it was like to be a minority. Although he didn't need to turn pro to succeed in life, he was determined to prove his father wrong and succeed on his own in this barbaric sport. He fought as if he had no other options. But he soon found out that there is one thing in this world that was not prejudice, had no agenda, political views, or racial bias, as he must choose between fighting the cancer in his body, or in the national tournament; the dream he had longed-for. Their race and social status influenced the paths they were forced to take in achieving this goal, but it taught them a valuable lesson about their own insidious racial views, realizing that they were more alike than what they had first believed.
