J. Wendell Mapson, Jr. was born in West Palm Beach, Florida and raised in Newark, New Jersey. He was baptized at age nine by his father, who for over fifty years was the pastor of the Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Newark. He was called into Christian Ministry at age nineteen.
Dr. Mapson is a graduate of Morehouse College, Atlanta, Georgia (Bachelor of Arts); Crozer Theological Seminary, Chester, Pennsylvania, now Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School, Rochester, New York (Master of Divinity); and Palmer Theological Seminary, Wynnewood, Pennsylvania, formerly Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary (Doctor of Ministry). In 2002 Palmer awarded him an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree. He has been an adjunct faculty member at both Palmer and Lutheran Theological Seminary of Philadelphia.
From 1969 to 1987 he was pastor of Union Baptist Church, Elizabeth, New Jersey. In July of 1987 he was called to the historic Monumental Baptist Church, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, a congregation organized in 1826.
Dr. Mapson is highly sought after as a preacher. Also, he is the author of The Ministry of Music in the Black Church and Strange Fire: A Study of Worship and Liturgy in the African-American Church and has lectured extensively in the area of music and worship. In 1994 he was inducted into the Martin Luther King, Jr. Board of Preachers at Morehouse College.
He is married to Shirley Jones Mapson, and they are the parents of three sons, Keith, Brian, and Jesse III.
