Text and Graphics Guidelines

Submission Guidelines for Text We'll need your complete and final manuscript submitted as a single electronic file, in MS Word or Word Perfect*. Author information/ bio copy and back cover/ book summary copy, should be included with the original submission at this link: book-summary. After submission, these files should be submitted to your Author Service Representative via email as Word file attachments. If your manuscript is not submitted in complete and final form, additional fees will be charged for author-requested changes. Any variation from these guidelines may cause a delay. These guidelines do not apply to scanned books. If you have any questions, please contact Acquisitions Assistant toll-free 1-866-381-2665, ext. 110. She can connect you with an Acquisitions manager who can provide you with answers and help. We are unable to provide support or instruction in how to use MS Word, WordPerfect or any other word processing software. Note: WORD is the preferred program. WORDPERFECT is often problematic to typeset, so extra fees may apply.

  1. Please submit entire book in one electronic file (in MS Word/ WordPerfect), containing all chapters. Please submit manuscript single-spaced, in 12-point, Times New Roman font. (Double-space as needed to achieve desired look of manuscript but, as a rule, text should be single-spaced.) Please include text styles in your manuscript: bold, italic, bold italic, underscore. Please include a title page as your first page of the manuscript, with complete title, subtitle, and author name exactly as you wish it to appear. Please be sure to label each chapter and/or section clearly in your manuscript. Indicate on the copyright page which version(s) of the Bible you will use by inserting this paragraph on the copyright page: Unless otherwise indicated, Bible quotations are taken from ___________ (version[s]) of the Bible. Copyright (c) _____ (year) by ___________ (publisher). Table of contents (TOC), indexes, appendixes, etc. If you'd like these in your book, you must include them with your manuscript in the exact order you would like them to appear in your book. Create these manually rather than using the automatic functions in MS Word. We will add page numbers to your TOC using your final typeset galley. Index page numbers are to be added by the author at the final, typeset galley stage of production. Do not use footnotes. Use in-text citations or endnotes if you need to cite your work. Do not use MS Word's automatic endnote function to create them. Instead type in both the endnote reference number and the endnote reference manually. Do not use Wingdings or characters unavailable within the normal character set. Use standard bullets only. Do not type your name, page numbers or title of book on every page. This will be done by us. Do not use the space bar or tab key to align or indent your text. Any indent you want in your text should be done with the margin controller. Use Tab key only to indent the first line of each paragraph. Do not use columns in your work. Do not use the Enter/ Return key at the end of each line (as you would on a typewriter). Let the text automatically flow from one line to the other. Only use the Enter/ Return key once at the end of each paragraph. Do not manually insert hyphens to indicate where a word should break at the ends of lines. To create long dashes (em dashes), use two hyphens.
  2. If you have an index, you must complete it based on the final, typeset galley you receive from Xulon Press.
If you have any questions, please contact your Xulon Press Acquisitions Manager (407) 339-4217, Karen (ext. 103), or Sylvia (ext. 104). Chances are we can resolve any issues and answer your questions.

Submission Guidelines for Graphics Photographs, illustrations, tables, text boxes, and charts—all are graphics. Graphics should be submitted in files separate from your manuscript file. If you have graphics in your book, we have specifications you will need to follow. If these guidelines are not followed, considerable delays may result. You may even have to resubmit your manuscript. Manuscripts with graphics usually take an additional 2 to 3 weeks to format, longer if we are scanning images. General Guidelines

  1. All interior graphics must be black and white. We cannot accept any color photographs. Graphics should be submitted in the actual size they are to appear in the finished book. A single graphic cannot continue across two pages. Graphics should be submitted within size limits according to the trim size you choose for your book:

    Trim size Graphic size limit
    5 x 8 3.5 x 6.5
    5.5 x 8.5 4 x 7
    6 x 9 4.5 x 7.5
    8.25 x 11 6 x 9

Use a point size of 11 or more in your graphics, nothing smaller. Do not place or imbed your graphics in the text of your manuscript. Remember, graphics should be submitted in files separate from your manuscript file. Graphics files should be named according to the order they will appear in your manuscript, not named by content. For example, if Graphic #1 in your book is “Baby Picture of Nanny” the file should be named “Graphic #1” not “Baby Picture of Nanny.” In your manuscript, indicate where a graphic is to appear in the text with a bracketed, boldface note. For example, **[GRAPHIC #1]**. Please number graphics in sequential order, according to the same bracketed, boldface placement notations you indicated in your manuscript. There is ONE exception to this rule—see Tables/ Charts section below.
  2. Remember to include $15 or $25 with your submission payment for each graphic element you want included in your manuscript: $25 per graphic for properly sized graphics we need to scan, $15 for graphics that come to us on disk or CD-ROM, in acceptable form. (Charges are subject to change without notification.)
Photographs/Illustrations
  1. You may send the actual images to be scanned, or you may scan the images and send them to us in a digital format (on a diskette or CD-ROM).
  2. If you scan your own images, they should be scanned at 100%, 300 dpi, then saved as a TIFF or JPEG file (please save as JPEG if emailing). If you provide images at a resolution lower than 300 dpi, they will not print well in your book.
Tables/Charts
  1. Please submit tables and charts in your manuscript’s original Word document. These are the only kinds of graphics that should be submitted within the Word document. This ensures a higher quality result in the final, printed book.
Our customer satisfaction is quite high, but you should be aware that we cannot guarantee your images will appear as you might expect—particularly photographic images. If you are providing graphics that are older, blurry, fuzzy, too dark or light, then please note that when they are printed in your book, they may not always reproduce well. There may also be some variance between print runs. If you have questions about this, please don’t hesitate to ask.
