Kentucky Becomes Backdrop for Blue and Gray-Era Novel
First-time fiction writer delivers daring debut

LONGWOOD, FL-And God Smiled ($21.99, paperback, 978-1-60034-964-5) tells the saga of the Greenlys, a Kentucky farming family struggling against evil forces at the outset of the Civil War. The story centers on Joseph, the family patriarch, and his son, Jonathan. Joseph struggles to keep his family safe from the immoral Consortium and its leader, Jonas Priest, who is trying to destroy them. Jonathan finds himself confronted with the transition from boy to man and his first love, the beautiful Suzanne, the daughter of Simon Fuller, Riverbend's new preacher. The tension and suspense build as Joseph joins operatives of the Underground Railroad helping slaves from Consortium plantations cross the Ohio River to freedom. Jonathan and Suzanne are thrust into the middle, recruited by their families to transport the slaves north, escaping the clutches of their evil masters in E. Chris Parker's debut novel.

The exciting page-turner will appeal to Christian readers seeking respite from offensive language and explicit sex that pervades so much of today's literature. Says Parker, "I make no bones about professing the Lordship of Christ in the Greenly family's faith and how that faith carries them through some very tough trials. It shows that a novel need not have all kinds of foul language or explicit sexual scenes to be a great read."

A former pilot, E. Chris Parker graduated from Aviation Officer Candidate School with the Navy's wings of gold, served at Naval Air Station Miramar, and flew F-14 Tomcats. Now he finds himself a long way from the pilot's controls, in seemingly unfamiliar territory, though he demonstrates his aptitude for writing with practiced ease. He and his family live in Chattanooga, Tennessee, with their two dogs, Pocket and Gaybaby.
