LONGWOOD, FL-While Michael Ballagh served in Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom from February 2006 to February 2007, he was comforted and encouraged by scriptures his wife, Debbie, gave him. These scriptures, contained in Debbie Lynn Ballagh's Encouragement for Soldiers (paperback, 978-1-60266-159-2), comprise a must-have book for every soldier. It includes the tools needed to maintain inner strength during times of intense stress and also includes a tribute to soldiers and a soldier's prayer.
"The book is relevant to what is going on in Iraq and Afghanistan and is a powerful tool to encourage soldiers as well as a witnessing tool," says Ballagh, whose 20 years of ministry experience made scouring the Bible for appropriate scriptures a cinch. The Scripture verses focus on 14 issues that soldiers face: attaining peace, gaining strength and power, obtaining victory in war, performing your calling, enduring as a soldier, securing safety and protection, handling difficult circumstances, preparing for battle, receiving blessings and rewards for obedience, maintaining a right attitude, subduing enemies, trusting God's sovereignty, overcoming negative emotions, and finding rest.
Debbie Ballagh is the founder and director of Servant's Heart. She earned an MA in counseling at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, and has worked as a social worker and family counselor. She is married to Michael, a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom, and has three sons. She and her family reside in Central Virginia.
