LONGWOOD, FL-Preparing for college is fraught with worries, from staying on top of academics to anxiety over roommates. As a graduation gift to high school seniors, author Quentarius Dewayne Wade, M.Ed., offers helpful hints on how to stay out of debt and achieve financial success in college and beyond. Now Hiring: A Financial Education Guide for High School Students Preparing for College (paperback, 978-1-60266-060-1) arms students to do head-to-head battle with financial liability. Included are seven keys to financial success, three financial dream "killers" and ways to avoid them, and how to earn money doing what you enjoy. "The Christian community is in a state of emergency when it comes to finances," says Wade. "Christians are buried under stacks of debt and unable to enjoy the fruits of their hard work. I want the reader to know they can achieve financial success as a college student!"
While a student at Oral Roberts University, Wade accumulated more than $6,000 in credit card debt, budgeted his money poorly, and took out student loans to pay for tuition. After two years of attending college, the debt became so bad he was forced to drop out. Estranged from family and friends, he soon took up residence in a hotel at which he was also employed. After a few months spent living and working in the hotel, he decided to re-enroll in college-and made it through to graduation. After graduating, he accepted a teaching position which afforded him the opportunity to pay off his credit card debt within one year. To this day, he remains debt-free. "Prevention is the best intervention," says Wade. "The process through which I navigated is avoidable."
Quentarius Dewayne Wade, M.Ed., earned a BA degree in psychology from Oral Roberts University and a master's in school psychology from Howard University, where he is pursuing a Ph.D. He currently works as a school psychologist in the District of Columbia Public Schools.
