Saluting the Unsung Heroes
Marine's wife pays homage to sacrifices military families must make

LONGWOOD, FL-These are challenging times for our military family. Author Gwen C. Rollings understands that the military life is not for the faint of heart as she spent over three decades as the wife of a United Stated Marine. After meeting her brother's drill instructor, a Marine Corps corporal, at Parris Island, South Carolina, in 1964, she traveled with him until he retired 35 years later as a Major General. Her book We Band of Sisters ($14.99, paperback, 978-1-60034-935-5; $24.99, hardcover, 978-1-60034-936-2) details the "unsung" sacrifices military wives and families make in supporting the service members who defend their country.

Many young wives are becoming disheartened with the frequent deployments of their husbands in recent years and rationalize it would have to be better on the "civilian" side of the hill. Rollings writes from a unique perspective to present an honest, straight forward account of what the life of a military family is like in order to answer these questions for herself and others: was it worth it for me and will a life of service be worth it for them. Now she shares what she learned on the road less traveled with the unsung heroes on the home front, this unique and courageous "band of sisters." This book salutes the courage and commitment it takes for these women to stay the course in today's turbulent times. The military lifestyle demands courage, commitment, and faith -often well beyond the capacity of what these women believe they have.

Gwen C. Rollings graduated Phi Beta Kappa, Magna Cum Laude from the University of South Carolina and holds a master's degree in communication from George Mason University. She and her husband, Major General Wayne Rollings, USMC (Ret.), have four children.
