Is President Bush Right On Intelligent Design?
Leading Scientist Weighs In

LONGWOOD, FL-Theorists of Genesis have always been at battle with those of evolution. "Especially American Christians," declares André Teissier-duCros, translator of The Fifth Rung on Jacob's Ladder by French author Jacques Caubet. "Whether about origins of man, of the universe, global warming, or prayers at school, academia and religion are at war. This war is 150 years old. Before that, ever since the Cro-Magnon man, spiritual and scientific progress went together." In what could be the most comprehensive work to date on this subject matter, readers may come to embrace a new theory: that man's scientific progress doesn't oppose God's will but, on the contrary, is part of His project for the universe.

In Teissier-duCros' English translation of The Fifth Rung on Jacob's Ladder: The Thousand Century's Saga of Religion and Science (August, $15.99, 1-59781-444-X) readers will learn about breakthroughs in science and theology that throw bridges between both camps. They also will discover that Fr. J.M. Maldamé, o.p., member of the Pontifical Academy (The Catholic Church), has written the preface for Caubet's work. Translator Teissier-duCros asserts that "mankind's scientific and technological progress was achieved by Judeo-Christian nations. The most advanced scientists have rediscovered God's will in the natural laws ruling each physical particle and each DNA code." He grapples with what he claims is an absurdity American believers, belonging to the nation that produced the space shuttle, antibiotics, Information Technology, and the Internet, retain the most backward religious prejudices against science as an access to God's truth. He proposes that "each of us can now cross these bridges to reach the Fifth Rung, the emergence of manŐs mind into universal consciousness."

Jacques Caubet was born in France in 1922. In 1953 he founded the HEF firm, dedicated to research in processes reducing friction and corrosion. As of 2005, HEF now owns over 300 patents and is the world leader in surface treatment technology, active in 15 countries and generating sales of $100 million, with 1,000 employees. Caubet has written four books, all published in France, on reconciling Christian faith with enterprise management and scientific research. Caubet has published several books and numerous articles in France during his 30-year research to reconcile science and faith according to the Neo-Thomist philosophy (Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, Jacques Maritain, Pierre Duhem, Etienne Gilson, Rene Girard, Xavier SallantinÉ) which is still little known in America except in very small circles. Caubet is a member of the Teilhard Association and Chevalier of the Legion of Honor. He is known and highly respected in Europe and by the Catholic Church for the thoroughness of his thought and his exceptional understanding of most fields of scientific research. In this book he introduces, for the first time, Sallantin's Theory of Meaning, which addresses Albert EinsteinŐs famous observation: "The most incomprehensible thing about our universe is that it is comprehensible." Neo-Thomism has gained considerable acceptance in Europe because it provides new and very convincing answers to the moral crisis experienced by the Western World.

André Teissier-duCros' credentials come from knowing Caubet and having worked with him on business and technology projects, and also exchanging views with Caubet since 1967. He is the first to translate and adapt Caubet's work (from French). André has a Ph.D. in engineering and is a U.S. citizen. He taught at Georgia Tech for 6 years and has given numerous seminars.
