LONGWOOD, FL-"Our nation is forgetting what it means to express a close bond to each other," says Jolene Janway, author of When the Cows Come Home (paperback, 978-1-60477-237-1) along with C. Ray Mayfield. "Instead of reading about all the violence in our country, it would be nice to emphasize the positive, caring nature we are capable of having."
Mayfield has illustrated the book, which tells about a herd of cows made up of two cow families, two single adult cows, and a wise old elder who is full of wisdom and humor, plus a few strays which help complete the storylines. Each cow is important and contributes something special to the herd. The herd represents a community and demonstrates how the members work and play together. Humans, like cows in a herd, need each other, says Janway. "We need to cultivate relationships."
A love story of a different sort, the book contains experiences involving relationships with God, family, friends, neighbors, caregivers, and strangers. The stories, based on firsthand experiences of both author and illustrator, have a unique way of presenting values and traits found in Scripture. The author hopes readers will see themselves in the stories and be more aware of their relationships.
Jolene Janway is a mother of two and a grandmother of one; she has a degree in elementary education and enjoys using her gift of storytelling. C. Ray Mayfield is a husband, father, grandfather, and cowboy who loves to create through drawing.
