Mysterious Manuscript Surfaces After More Than 20 Years
Includes experiences of author working in mission field of Brazil

LONGWOOD, FL-Last spring, Josephine Overhulser stumbled upon a forgotten manuscript in her cousin's home. Written between 1978 and 1981, Called According to His Purpose: From Indiana Farm-Life to Church Planting on Brazil's Coffee Frontiers (paperback, 978-1-60266-448-7) details the life of her cousin, the late Richard L. Ummel, and his adventures while church planting in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Having already written the biography of her father, Overhulser decided to take on the editing required of this manuscript and its prolific content-from the potential dangers of the jungle to Brazil's coffee frontiers.

Says Overhulser, "The author seized the opportunity (during the illness prior to his death) as a time to reflect on his lifetime of commitment to the Lord. He records experiences of God working in him and through him to give wisdom and direction in meeting needs-physically, economically, emotionally, intellectually, and spiritually."

"[My cousin] takes you from Sao Paulo westward on roads of mud and jungle trails into the state of Parana, where coffee farms await harvest," says Overhulser. "Here, workers arrive daily, and these continuously migrating families find hope, restoration, and healing through his Bible studies, worship, and youth groups. Along with his wife, Jackie, and their four children, readers will experience the joys, sorrows, thrills, hardships, excitement, and the patience required to follow wherever God leads you."

Second oldest in a family of 10 children, Richard L. Ummel loved the family dairy farm he helped manage after his father's death. After pastoring a year, the United Missionary Society (UMS) of the Missionary Church accepted his family for church planting in Brazil.
