Teaching English as a Second Language Leads to Divine Opportunities
Language lessons in Poland brought strangers together, changed lives

LONGWOOD, FL-Teaching English as a second language can be a powerful and effective tool for Christians to serve the community, develop friendships, and share faith with people who would never set foot in a church. I Came Only for English: A Model for Missions (paperback, 978-1-60266-704-4) is the account of a unique mission in Poland; Christians from English-speaking countries who desired to do something useful for God followed the call to come to Poland and serve as teachers of English. This heartwarming story shows how teaching and learning English, first at camps and then at Wroclaw Language School, brought strangers together, broke down ethnic barriers, and built relationships through which God touched many lives. Firsthand descriptions of events, people's stories, and personal testimonies reveal the power of God to transform lives.

"God uses our natural abilities to draw people to Himself," says author Ruth Kowalczuk. "I Came Only for English gives you a fresh look at Poland and the evangelical outreach there. I draw on the stories and testimonies of students and teachers who relate how God has worked in their lives."

Ruth Kowalczuk is a retired lecturer of English at the School of Economics in Wroclaw, Poland, and she holds an MA degree in American literature from Warsaw University. She translated into Polish parts of New Testament commentaries by William Barclay and Seven Deadly Sins by Billy Graham. She is the author of The Adult Sunday School (Zborowa Szkola Biblijna). She was an initiator and leader of the English language evangelistic camps ministry in Poland in the 1980s, is a founder of Wroclaw Language School, and served as its director from 1989 to 1997.
