LONGWOOD, FL-Just a few months after his wife of 51 years died, author William Cook boarded an airplane and traveled to Brazil to marry Heleodora, a woman he barely knew. Though she spoke a different language and was of a different culture, she shared his faith, values, and love. It Happened in Brazil (paperback, 978-1-60034-958-4), authored by William Cook, is the whimsical romance and adventure story of a second marriage and allows readers the chance to see God at work, guiding lives and preparing the way.
Says Cook, "Our story is unusual because it tells of renewed contact after 30 years in different countries. Readers may be encouraged to expect God's blessing in their lives because we have seen God in our lives and the lives we have touched."
When Cook's tour of duty first brought him to Rio de Janeiro, he visited a church and sat next to a young woman named Heleodora who had developed a fondness for American music and movies, especially Two Girls and a Sailor. It was love at first sight. They corresponded with each other even after Cook returned to the United States. His letters told of work, enrollment in college, family, friends, and marriage. Heleodora believed life had separated her from Cook forever and that she would never again see her sailor. Little did she know God would reunite them years later, this time as man and wife. They married on January 4, 2003. "I have had a very blessed life serving as a pastor and with marriage to two of the best women in the world," says Cook.
William Oxley Cook was born in Springfield, Ohio, in 1926. He graduated from Bob Jones University and Methodist Theological School in Ohio. After the passing of his wife, Ladora, he married a Brazilian friend named Heleodora.
