This collection of personal essays describes a ten year southern journey that began in grief, was transformed by grace, and continues in gratitude for the many gifts God has bestowed on the writer’s life – through seasons of powerful storms, bright sunshine, falling leaves, or winter chill. With hope, humor and hesitation, the writer shares her journey from unbelief, to faith, redemption, and a continual pursuit of God’s will. A few side trips for self-doubt, self-will and new romance are also included. Most of the essays take place in and around Marion, South Carolina – “that pretty little town on the way to the beach” – where she found the true meaning of southern hospitality.

Marti Miller Willoughby has been writing most of her adult life. Her career years included writing newsletters, advertising and marketing materials, teaching, student advising, curriculum writing, and other creative pursuits. She recently spent ten years as a contributing writer for a monthly regional women’s magazine after moving from Maryland to South Carolina in hot pursuit of a cancer cure for her husband. The cure did not come but the desire to become as southern as possible remained her widowed goal. Writing themes include grief, grace, grits and gratitude, with an unfortunate smattering of northern attitude. She resides on a dusty country road with her new and final husband, adopted animals, multiple flying pigs and various uninvited wildlife. Her adult children and bonus children cling to the hope that she will stop writing about them while God continues to encourage her to work on her many imperfections. Bless her heart. And her very gray hair.
