The Psychology of Youth Gangs is about the
clinical diagnostic characteristics and symptomology ascertained from mental
health assessments, full case evaluations, and muiti-axial diagnoses of   gang involved youth. The identified
populations were assessed in the King County Juvenile Drug Court, Seattle
Children's Home, Juvenile Rehabilitation Administration and the Skagit County
Juvenile Detention
Center. The author has
assessed hundreds of adolescents from various ethnic groups and different
street gangs. The assessment results revealed a high prevalence of Post
Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Depression, Anxiety, Conduct Disorder, and
Oppositional Deviance Disorder; as well as co -occurring disorders of substance
and alcohol abuse.
These mental disorders are the etiology of
the manifested behaviors of none compliance, refusal to assimilate to societal
norms and rejection of authority figures. They also are reflective of physical
aggressive belligerent reluctant learners that are disruptive in our school
settings and directly related to the escalation in youth and community
violence. This book is written for individuals that work with the adolescent
population that are at-risk of or gang involved such as; school counselors,
mental health clinicians, psychologist, probation and parole counselors, and
case managers in the social service industry. This book can assist you in
understanding the sub-culture ideology and generational traditions of the gang
culture from a clinical perspective.
