We assume our freedom and equality, evolving out of Christian free will and equality, will withstand all assaults. We cannot imagine there are Muslim leaders who would like to substitute those qualities with their totalitarian law and society, the first steps to be made through the imposition of Shari’a law. This is something we must stop.
A Christian (or even a secularist) can find forgiveness and a new start in this life, the gift of atonement by Jesus. In contrast the Muslim bears a heavy spiritual burden. Allah is not a god of love and reason but of power, far removed from man’s expectations. The good and evil deeds of a Muslim are simply added together, values of each of them unknown.
Politically, the final commissions of Jesus and Muhammad are drastically different. Jesus had clarified the separation of religion and state, and his last message sent certain disciples into the world to preach his gospel of love and forgiveness. The Prophet of Islam combines mosque and state in his person, and he seemed to speak to all Muslims equally – to his companions who founded a line of governing caliphs and to tribesmen whose chieftains kept the peace or became ungovernable and violet. Too bad that in the West political science departments do not give much time to the study of Islam. This book by Smithson may help fill that void.
Emma Paul Smithson says that she is not an academician. She is an at-home mom married to a teacher, and the sources she uses are available to everyone, those who are wise enough to be interested. Her book is unique in that under one cover she combined many of the diverse and important aspects of Muslim society and Islamic beliefs.
