The Scarlet Thread is a collection of poetry that touches on the Old Testament story of Rahab, the Jericho prostitute, who saves her family “on the signal of a scarlet thread.” This collection metaphorically explores the symbolism of the scarlet thread and its lifeline throughout scripture and its extension within today’s society.

A thread…Sometimes in life all we have to hold on to is a thread. I have come to understand and respect the power of God that he releases into a thread. With a rib thread, He made woman. With a hem thread, He healed a woman, and with a scarlet thread, He yet again extended the skirt of His covering and saved a woman and her household. May the words found here in this collection of poetry reveal the threads of life that God has divinely positioned for you. Holding to the thread is to hold on to God’s unchanging hand. Vernal Pope has a love for language, a passion for learning, and a gift for teaching. She has been a high school English teacher for the past 20 years and has been writing equally as long. She is also an artist and licensed minister. Her work has appeared in the Inkwell, Kalliope, and The Griot. She holds a Master’s Degree in Administrative Leadership and Policy Studies, two Bachelor’s Degrees in English/Secondary Education and Multicultural Communications through the Arts, and an Associate of Applied Science in Accounting Degree.
