Carefree Max Baker views the Great Depression as merely a confusing nuisance in his life until he suffers a very serious accident that results not only in the loss of his job but the use of his right arm. How will he continue to care for his wife, five children and his mother who has come to live with them? His life spirals out of control as he embarks on a yearlong pity party that severs his relationship with his closest friends, Doug and Lydia Wheeler.
Meanwhile, Doug’s life is intertwined with a young stranger who arrives in town and stuns the small community with the revelation of a century old secret. Max and Doug’s friendship is finally restored when a near tragic event brings the two men together and drives Max to his knees when he realizes just how shallow his faith in God has been.
