Born and raised in the Boston area, spending summers in Canada, the author has lived in Puerto Rico and North Carolina. She is fluent in Spanish and has worked as a Spanish translator for the health dept. in the past in her youth she has had many jobs so is a jack of all trades master of none but has spent the last twenty years before retirement in mental health and much of that in a program similar to that talked about in the book. She met many funny, intelligent, people and also some she would rather have not met. But that went as well for management and co-workers, and they probably say the same for the author as she tends to be outspoken.
