Author Chester Yuan captures the amazing and devoted life of his incredible mother from the humble beginnings in Beijing, China to the new land of opportunity in America. Yuan Wang Chih-Hui’s momentous decision to travel from safety of Hong Kong back to Beijing to see her ailing mother with three infants, and the perilous return journey to Hong Kong in the midst of the war-torn China are detailed in this book. The book reveals his mother’s struggles and challenges as a single Mom raising three small growing boys in Taipei, Taiwan. Wang Chih Hui’s resilience in dealing with foreigners in strange culture and strange land of Korea and the United States of America are recorded. Wang Chih-Hui’s devotion to her family and the unwavering dedication to the happiness of her family including four sons and one daughter are the goals and themes that dominated her life in China, Taiwan, Korea and the United States.
Her teachings and legacy modeled through her actions are easily seen in several generations from her sons and daughter and their children and grand children. Her memories and compassion are also passed on through many Nursing Students at the University of Virginia through the Yuan Wang Chih-Hui Nursing Scholarship recipients.
The author, Chester Yuan, would have never had the opportunities afforded to him without the momentous and life changing decision by his mother. He couldn’t have dreamt of two successful careers in corporate America and pastoral ministry nor could he have retired comfortably with his own family in Virginia had his mother not made her courageous escape of his mother from China. This author is filled with gratitude for his amazing mother and God for His providence.
