true written account of the Banyamulenge people—often referred to as a
displaced group, who are found mainly in the South Kivu province within the
Democratic Republic of Congo. An alarming fact is that these people are not
able to move freely in their country without fear of being exterminated by militia, peasants of other tribes, ethnic groups or
militia armed from Rwanda or the Congo.
“The single most important item in my book would be to increase the awareness of the public to how the Banyamulenge are being treated and killed,” states the author. “This still continues to this day. There has been no relief from this issue. Poverty is lived every day. Rape continues with no control by law, which causes increase in HIV/AIDS and many other diseases including leprosy. Medical buildings, schools, churches and financial buildings are destroyed and none are built in their place.”
Debra Lynn Heagy is a Registered Nurse and has worked in area hospitals of Ohio and Maryland taking care of children and adults with heart, lung, kidney and abdominal problems. Heagy developed an interest in the Banyamulenge people from the ones she knew living in her community of Kettering, Ohio. The people who shared their life experiences shed light to the public on what has been happening from the 1960's to the present on the horrible events of genocide. The author adds, “I’ve always had an interest in helping people both here and abroad. Going on mission trips opened my eyes on the needs of the people in the states, South America and Central Africa.”
