Reverend
Anne Stephenson offers educational information to anyone affected by a sexual
scandal in Adult Sexual Abuse in Religious Institutions: Faith Seeks Understanding
($13.99, paperback, 9781498477079; $6.99, e-book, 9781498477086). As reports of abuse surface, many religious
leaders and laypeople will benefit from her research and insight.
Stephenson addresses the issues that sexual abuse victims
face, as well as guiding them to the support they need. She also discusses the response she believes
the church should make to the offender.
“The wider community
is alarmed by the way the Church has handled sexual abuse. It is thought it
involved men and boys but the issue is much wider than that. Both genders can
be involved in abuse as offenders and as victims. It is a matter of power and
control, not of sexuality,” said Stephenson.
Anne Stephenson
is now retired from parish ministry and offers ministry to victims of abuse in
regard to clergy sexual misconduct. She has three children and two
grandchildren.
