Author Jeannie Varnuska encourages young readers to focus on their strengths and not get bogged down by their limitations in Diesel, the Basset Hound Who Couldn’t Howl ($20.99, paperback, 9781662828379; $30.99, hard cover, 9781662828386; $9.99, e-book, 9781662828393).

Diesel was a happy, carefree puppy until the day his big brother told him he had no hope for the future because Diesel cannot howl.  Will no one ever love him?

In the end, Diesel discovers what we all should know. No one is good at everything, but everyone is good at something,” said Varnuska.

Jeannie Varnuska worked for the Los Angeles Unified School District for 25 years, and her beloved Basset Hound Diesel was the attendance mascot for part of that time.  She and Diesel also participated in a program called BARK that allowed them to visit local libraries so that children could read to the very non-judgmental, long-eared Basset Hound.
