Author Verna R Deno shares an emotional journey of unyielding faith and perseverance in Kakembo: A Heart Connection ($23.99, paperback, 9781662874871; $9.99, e-book, 9781662874888).
Deno’s book is the result of an unexpected encounter between she and a very special individual named Kakembo in Mityana, Uganda. It was Kakembo’s unwavering faith among major life challenges that inspired Deno to share his story as an inspiration to others.
Deno shares that as youngsters, Kakembo and Joseph, were left to live alone on the streets. Life was dangerous and they were hungry and thirsty. One day, they were saved by a pastor and his wife, who gave the boys a home. This was the start of something bigger as more and more children were also saved, and a children’s orphanage was born. When Covid-19 left them with severe financial shortages including food and water, Kakembo’s unyielding faith and effort to persevere took over for the sake of his children. This real-life adventure with incredible odds for survival gives in-depth glimpses into their hearts and life struggles, along with joyous victories.
When asked what inspired the author to write this book, Deno said, “Real life experiences and true heart connections with Kakembo inspired me to write this book.”
Verna Deno currently lives in Hayden, Idaho, with her husband of 50 years, Bob. Her career has included missionary, pastor’s wife, multi-cultural school administrative assistant, and bilingual tutor. Her travels included countries such as Italy, Switzerland, Canada, Mexico, and most recently, Africa. Deno’s combined intercultural experiences contribute to the pursuit of her lifelong desire to write. This book reflects the convoluted trials and joys of her love for other cultures and an extraordinary young Ugandan man and his adorable thirty-three orphans. Deno enjoys quality time spent with her daughter, Monica, and son-in-law, Ben. She also enjoys hiking and traveling with her husband, and photography.
