LONGWOOD, FL--Poetry expresses the deepest of emotions and reveals the passionate core of what the writer is feeling and thus is able to carry the reader to feel those same emotions. In author Effie Darlene Barba's Mercies and Exhortations: A Book of Poems ($10.99, paperback, 978-1-60791-780-9)--a collection that has been written over a period of many years--the author expresses one major theme: that God is faithful and full of mercy and grace, even when the obstacles of life may have created pain, sorrow, or doubt. The book displays the frailties of a human spirit that can be overcome when united with an all-powerful God of love.

Says the author of her new title, "It is very open, expressing at times the rawest of emotions, pouring out the questions that sometimes press our minds and souls. Yet it shows forth His love and strength. It is sorrow transformed to joy and questions transformed into hope. It points toward the glory of God's love, which is sufficient to meet all of our needs. Even more than that, He uses each and every thing in my life to point me to keep my focus on Christ's sacrifice and glory, that He might transform me step by step into His likeness and His glory."

Having lived through abuse, sorrow, illness, and financial distress, Barba was led to find that God had a plan to show her His magnificent glory and that He is sufficient. Through His strength, she was able to live with and overcome cancer, ulcerative colitis, chronic autoimmune pancreatitis, and much more. This collection of heartfelt poems reinforces what the author knows to be true: "With Him, I can do all things," she says. "Step by step, He has used all of my life to point me to His glory." He will do the same for readers if they, too, learn to trust in Him for deliverance from their sorrows.
