'Tough Love' Author Lays Down Law for Prisoners

Points the hopeless toward hope in Christ

2007-07-17

LONGWOOD, FL-A teacher for most of his working life, author Ken Gartner's career came to a sudden end 24 years ago when he served a short prison term. While incarcerated, he turned to Christ and soon made a covenant to tell prisoners everywhere about GodÕs love. That covenant is now fulfilled with the release of Dying to Live (paperback, 978-1-60266-232-2), the author's personal testimony geared toward prison survivors and those on death row who might believe that life ends at death. In addition, the book provides insight for ordinary Christians into the thinking, frustrations, and fears of men and women in prison.

"I hope readers in prison will realize they have a divinely planned destiny, that Jesus is the only way to revealing that true destiny to them, and that they can achieve that destiny even while in prison," says Gartner.

Dying to Live highlights the tenuous state of the world today and where it is headed as a consequence of not putting Jesus Christ at the head of mankind's list of priorities. Gartner believes that if this trend continues, mankind will continue on its downward spiral to inevitable destruction, but that those who follow the way of Christ will survive those catastrophes and come out winners. "If it was not for Him, I would not be alive today," says Gartner. "I want others who are imprisoned to survive as well. Jesus will go beyond any concrete or brick wall to be with a prisoner who calls out to Him to rescue him and give him real life."

A New Zealand Maori, Ken Gartner earned BA, BA (Hon), and MA degrees in Maori studies at Victoria University and is studying toward a doctorate degree. He is a member of Prison Fellowship New Zealand and holds services in both men's and women's prisons.
