Harper was 96 when he penned the book, his mind was sharp and thus he was able to remember accurately many details of his youthful days, writing things such as ?"Mama never told me how many chickens the doctor charged per-pound to deliver me.” He paints a revealing picture that describes the struggles and strife of many Americans during the early 1900s. Rising ?"the sticks” of Wise County, Texas, with only an eighth-grade education, and not a very good one at that, from there Rev. Harper managed, with no money, to forge a path through the halls of academia that would eventually award him a bachelor’s degree from Texas Christian University. With additional studies at Brite Seminary, he accumulated enough graduate hours to be ordained into Christian ministry. Rev. Harper, the first of his family to receive a college education, was able to cast a positive influence upon the many people he would meet along his journey. During his service of 53 years as a Texas clergyman, he received two of the highest awards that a congregation can bestow upon a minister, that of Minister Emeritus and the distinguished title of Small Congregation Minister of the Year. The stories he tells reflect these experiences and are full of humor as they historically inform the reader about The Way We Were.
