MAITLAND, FL— In his new book, Surprised
by the Fire: Preparing Your Heart And Mind For Difficult Days ($13.99,
paperback, 9781626974463; $6.99, e-book,
9781626974470)
Dr.
Tom Mills does just as the subtitle suggests—he readies his audience for any
kind of suffering. This notion is based on 1 Peter in the Bible, which
discusses “preparing the heart and mind.” Instead of preparing readers strictly
for the suffering of persecution, the author broadens the spectrum and uses peace
and joy to tackle any trial.
“Christians are always surprised when suffering comes,” states the author. “We have been taught that we are somehow exempt from trials in general and persecution, specifically. I hope people will come away from this book with an understanding that we may, indeed, have to suffer for the cause of Christ—but that we do not need to fear or dread it if we will follow Peter’s teachings.”
Dr. Tom Mills has served more than twenty-five years as a pastor in the United Methodist Church in the Panhandle and South Plains of Texas. In 2002, he and his wife, Debbie, relocated to Kansas and eventually joined the staff of the International House of Prayer of Kansas City. The author holds a Bachelor’s degree from Texas Tech University, a Master of Divinity from Asbury Theological Seminary and a Doctor of Ministry from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School.
