MAITLAND, FL— At the core of Harvey Greenhalgh’s new book, NEEDLE IN THE HEART: The House of Mad Eccentrics, ($15.99, paperback, 9781498419130; $7.99, e-book, 9781498419147) readers will discover superb nursing care, the excellence of bedside nursing care, and the very art of nursing; as well as unbelievably eccentric surgeons and doctors who were also quite brilliant. The author shares that the nurse’s training that he received heightened his sensory skills, allowed him to gain clarity of understanding, and developed both professionalism and gentle compassion within his line of work.

“‘Hands on’ nursing care has no replacement,” states the author. “Academia cannot teach the essence of the human touch, nor compassion that comes from an understanding heart. The pendulum of Academia has swung too far and patient care is suffering.”

Harvey Greenhalgh from Lancashire, England, began as a cadet nurse in 1954. He became a student nurse at eighteen. Three years as a student nurse at a large hospital gave him the most incredible experiences working alongside wildly eccentric, bizarre, yet brilliant physicians. In those years, Harvey learned what “nursing care” really meant. It is the personal and professional understanding of every aspect of high quality, unbeatable human caring, taught by aggressively demanding ward sisters; and of course the patients that he cared for with tenderness, gentle patience, increasing skill, and even love. The author has traveled to RAF Hospitals in England, Aden, Arabia, East Africa, and finally to the U.S. He has obtained his R.N., B.A., M.A., and PhD. Going from a staff nurse to the assistant director of nurses.
