MAITLAND, FL— Jeffrey R Funk’s new book, Coming Alongside - Basic Pastoral Care at the Bedside, ($15.49, paperback, 9781498460392; $7.99, e-book, 9781498460408) offers practical guidelines for visiting sick and suffering patients in the hospital, for calling on residents in a convalescent home, for being present with those facing death, and for coming alongside those who are grieving. This book will help readers make a difference in the lives of others by providing useful insights for caring through listening, by explaining some essential “do’s and don’ts” for visiting, by clarifying how to handle emergencies, by helping with dying and grief issues, by teaching how to set boundaries for the ministry, and by showing how to avoid compassion fatigue. This basic pastoral care training guide is designed as an essential introduction for those who want to provide pastoral care –comfort – to the hurting. Anyone who is involved in ministering to those who are patients in a hospital or residents in a nursing home or seriously ill folks in hospice will benefit from the information found in this book – including chaplains, clergy, lay ministers, and anyone who cares about coming alongside those who are sick and suffering.

If you want to equip your congregation to come alongside the hurting … if you feel helpless in visiting those who are dying and grieving … if you would like to visit the sick, but don’t know how to get started … this book can help you,” states the author.
