MAITLAND, FL— Frank L. Lanza, M.D.’s new book, Gut Check - A Simple Guide to Diseases of the Digestive Tract, ($10.99, paperback, 9781498461245; $5.99, e-book, 9781498461252) provides a source of information for patients with digestive disorders – in language that non-medical personnel can understand. Dr. Lanza brings over 40 years of practice and a wealth of research to the writing of this book. His goal is to impart a general basic knowledge of the common diseases of the digestive tract to patients and other people who have an interest in these disorders. He confined the subjects covered to those digestive diseases that account for 95% of the problems of patients consulting a physician for gastrointestinal complaints. Readers will discover the cause, description, diagnosis, and treatment of the illnesses. The book is both readable and informative for its intended audience – people without medical education – but with a desire for knowledge about the digestive illnesses affecting them.

Patients with digestive diseases are usually poorly informed about their illnesses, this book remedies that,” states the author. “It also dispels many medical myths. Readers should be able to recognize the symptoms of the various gastrointestinal diseases, how they are diagnosed and treated.

Dr. Frank L. Lanza received his medical degree and a master’s degree in biochemistry from The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. He completed his residency and fellowship in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology at Baylor College of Medicine and The University of Texas/M.D. Anderson Hospital Cancer Center in Houston Texas. He is currently Professor of Medicine in the section of Gastroenterology of the Department of Medicine at Baylor. He is a past president of both The American College of Gastroenterology and The Texas Society of Gastroenterology and Endoscopy. He is a recipient of the highest awards for service from both societies. He founded the Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Laboratory at the Harris County Ben Taub General Hospital for the teaching service of The Baylor College of Medicine and remains currently active in that program. In addition to his teaching and practice roles, Dr. Lanza has been active in clinical research – publishing over 100 scientific papers in peer reviewed medical journals covering various subjects, but is best known for his extensive work in gastric ulcer disease relating to anti-inflammatory drugs.
