Richard
Strawn’s book The Last Irish Priest ($15.49, paperback, 9781545622384; $7.99,
e-book, 9781545624135), is available for purchase.
The Last
Irish Priest tells the story of
Vincent and Mary O’Leary and their weekend return to Northern California to
visit with their old friend, Father Hugh McDonnell. The union of the couple and
Father Hugh McDonnell had become estranged after accusations of sexual abuse of
Catholic priests in their parish surfaced, and the couple returned after
learning of the priest’s removal from the parish. Memories flooded the trio as
they reminisced about their time together, visited one priest’s grave, and visited
another priest in prison.
In this
book, these characters also have discussions about weaknesses in the Catholic
Church, sex and intimacy in marriage, and about how the Church remained silent
instead of representing Jesus to others. What began as reconciliation for their
friendship took them on a path to spiritual redemption and learning God’s plan
for us, all of which readers will learn from as well.
