Author Thomas Wayne Sanders recounts his friendship with Bonnie and her fight with illness in The Bonnie Code: One girl’s battle with mitochondrial disease, using joy as her armor ($15.49, paperback, 9781631293672; $7.99, e-book, 9781631293689).

Sanders met Bonnie through his church’s Compassion Ministry team and served for four years as her “Bonnie-sitter.”  An intelligent young woman in her twenties, Bonnie continually amazed Sanders with the attitude she managed to maintain, even though she was in so much pain.

“[The Bonnie Code] illuminates the complexity of Mitochondrial Disease, while offering a heart-warming story of a families’ attitude of gratitude in the face of constant physical struggle – along with real examples of how the Grace of God and His Plan can shine in our lives and in those around us – no matter our condition,” said Sanders.

Tom Sanders is the Contracts Senior Administrator for the Surgical and Procedural Value and Alignment Program (SPVAP) at Banner Health in Phoenix, Arizona. He and his wife Kimberly enjoy keeping up with five grown children between them, a growing number of grandchildren and their dainty dachshund, Stella.
