Mark W. McAdams grew up in Texas, joined the Navy at age 17 and spent two hitches traveling the world. He took up firefighting and served 22 years with a large metro department, and then as a fire chief for smaller departments before retiring to pastor a small, country church. McAdams and his wife share 6 children and 14 grandchildren.
