Author Martha Harris shares an autobiography combined with historical pieces of her family history that readers will find enthralling in The Uptick: My Family from Slavery to Obama ($52.99, paperback, 9781662829079; $63.99, hardcover, 9781662829086; $9.99, e-book, 9781662829093).

In this riveting memoir by Martha Harris, she traces her family from the days of slavery through the time of Obama’s administration, and includes chronicles of her life’s journey today. Her insightful words are written based on journal entries, family photographs and beloved memories from the author and her family. The book documents family members who were born slaves, their children and the oppressive barriers they overcame as the years progressed. Harris shares the details of her experiences with racism, struggles with marital life and raising children in an everchanging world. She shows that these “upticks” were just God’s way of leading her forward, in addition to her family’s history shaping the lives of future generations.

When asked what inspired the author to write this book, Harris said, “My family has a rich history that involves mystery, intrigue and eye openers related to recent problems.”

Martha Harris was born in Macon, Georgia and lived in eight states before she retired after 45 years as an educator, business owner, consultant and seminar presenter. Harris has been married four times, and is the mother of two children in addition to being blessed with one grandson and one great granddaughter. Her first book, Tools for Survival, published in 1984 and sold over 6,000 copies. Harris played competitive tennis for 40 years and enjoyed the practice of yoga and Pilates for over 65 years. In addition to being a licensed scuba diver with skills that took her down into 80 feet of water in Tahiti and the Bahamas, she also plays piano for her own entertainment.
